Default editor

Key point: Editor used for regular fragments.

The default editor is the editor you use unless you’re editing properties, xref lists or media content.

Editing options

When you’re editing, the options available to you are displayed in the editing toolbar, or inside the editing context menu available to you when using the mouse right-click.

Many options are also available as keyboard shortcuts, so you don’t have to use the mouse.

Text patterns also enable formatting of content without having to use the editing toolbar or editing context menu.

Typography

PageSeeder automatically applies the left and right quotation marks as you type, like Word processors “smart quote” feature. It automatically recognises common English contractions. You can cancel the change using the undo function or with Control+Z.

Paragraphs, headings, preformat and block labels

See editing paragraphs, headings and other blocks.

Lists

See editing lists.

Inline formatting and labels

See inline formatting and labels.

Links, cross-references and images

See inserting and editing links, xrefs and images.

Tables

See creating and editing tables.

Special characters

To help you insert special characters into text content.

Add a special character

  • In the editing toolbar, click the Ω option to open the Special Character dialog. Navigate to or type a character name to search and then click a character.
  • In your content, type the auto-complete pattern :, then the first two letters of a special character name. Press Enter when your character name displays or click your character if more than one option is auto-suggested.

Placeholders

Placeholders can be mapped to a metadata property. They can be added to content before a corresponding property has been created – see How to create a metadata property for placeholders.

Placeholders have two states (resolved and unresolved) and can be added in two ways:

  • In your content, for existing properties, you can use the inline text pattern – Type "[" (left square bracket), followed by the first letter of the metadata property name. Press Enter when your name displays, or click another option if more than one is auto-suggested.

Role – for PSML content

Lists, preformatted text and tables can be given a role. The role is a custom value that can be used to distinguish or assign a particular formatting style to your elements.

Role is restricted to the following characters: [a-zA-Z0-9_\-]+

Add a role

  • When in a list or preformatted content – in the editing context menu, select the Edit role option to open the Set role dialog.
  • In tables – a role can be assigned in the options for Table, Row, Cell or Column properties. For more information on editing tables, see Table editing.

For preformatted content, by default, PageSeeder only recognizes roles starting with lang-,  for example, lang-xml for an XML document. It is used in document view mode to apply syntax highlighting to code blocks.

General controls

Some options show dialogs to ask you more detail about the information you’re trying to insert or edit.

Undo

In the editing toolbar, you can undo recent edits by clicking the Undo icon or you can use the keyboard shortcut Control+Z.

Redo

In the editing toolbar, you can redo recent edits by clicking the Redo icon or you can use the keyboard shortcut Control+Shift+Z.

Save

To save your edits, click the Save document button at top right or press Control+S to save the document, or click the  icon on the right of a fragment.

Paste content as text

In the editing toolbar, when you click the Paste as text button, the content in your clipboard is pasted as a single block of text, discarding any formatting or styling from the original source.

Clear formatting

In the editing context menu, click the Clear formatting option.

Inline formatting, inline and block labels and list styles are removed but headings, paragraphs, numbering, links and xrefs are preserved.

How to find this page

You are using the default editor when your document is in edit mode and the cursor is in an editable fragment.
