Discussions page

Key point: Use this page to view the most recent comments posted in your group.

This page lets you browse all the comments that have been posted in your group in either a discussion or a task.

They are organized by threads. You can use the discussions list panel to the left to navigate to a specific thread. Click the icon in the header bar to open the panel.

Use the plus button on the right to create a new task or discussion.

Discussions list panel

The Discussions list displays in the left panel, with the most recent discussion at the top. The contents of the most recent comment is seen in the main section of the page.

Discussions that have been made into tasks are also listed on this page. You can also view tasks in your group on the tasks page or in the document tasks panel when viewing a document.

Each thread in the list displays:

  • Title – the subject of the discussion, and:
    • number of comments in discussion – in parenthesis, the total number of comments, including the original comment.
    • icon – if attachments are included with the comment. Hold the pointer over the icon, you see “Includes attachments”.
  • Time – since discussion was created. Hold the pointer over the time to see creation date and time.
  • Authors – the first name and surname of every member who contributed to the discussion.
  • Context document – the media icon and document title of the document commented on, if any. Click the document title to open the document.

Click to open a discussion thread in the main section.

Archived comments

If the  Show archived comments, tasks and discussions option is turned on in your preferences page, you see a message at the top of the discussions list.

Click the Turn off button if you don’t want to see them. If a comment is archived, it is indicated both in the discussions panel and in the main section. Group managers can unarchive a comment by clicking the icon, on the right in the main section.

Main section

The full discussion is displayed with individual comments returned in chronological order.

The current title of the thread is displayed at the top, preceded by either the icon for a discussion or for a task.

Context

If the discussion is posted against a document, URL or fragment, the context is shown at the top in a callout box with the icon before the first comment. The media icon before the document title lets you identity the media type.

You can click the icon to preview the document in a document panel to the right.

Task properties

If the discussion is a task, the task properties (status, priority, assignee and due date) are displayed at the top. They reflect the current state of the task.

They are automatically updated as the task is updated, for example if you reply and change any of the task properties.

Comment format

Each comment follows the same format.

The author’s name alongside their personal profile icon is displayed on the left and the time elapsed since the comment was originally posted to the right following the comment options. You hold the cursor over the time to see the exact date and time.

If the comment is part of a task, only the task properties which have changed since the last comment are shown at the top of the comment.

The comment itself is shown within a lightly colored box or speech bubble.

If the comment includes any attachments, they are listed after the text. Images and PDF also show a thumbnail – click the thumbnail to zoom in/out of the image to see a preview of the content.

If the comment has any labels, they are listed after the attachment.

If the comment content was modified, only the details of the most recent modification displays, following the comment content, on the right. The details are preceded by a grey  icon, followed by the member name and day and date of the modification.

Comment options and reply

The comment options let you modify an individual comment.

On the right, depending on your role in the group, the comment can be:

  • edited – click the icon, opens the edit comment dialog.
  • moved – click the icon, opens the move comment dialog.
  • archived – click the icon, opens a dialog to confirm that you want to archive the comment.
  • unarchived – click the  icon if the comment is archived.
  • deleted – click the  icon, this option requires some special configuration to be enabled.

Members with the role of contributor can edit or archive their own comments only. Managers (and higher) can edit and archive any comment.

Click the Reply button at the bottom of the discussion thread to open the reply dialog.

When replying from the user interface, the reply only contains the reply comment. But by email, we can’t control it, so to avoid content being repeated, PageSeeder prunes out what looks like a copy of previous comments.
