Document edit mode

Key point: The document view in edit mode.

To edit a document while viewing it, click the edit mode switch in the top right corner of the document toolbar. This changes the display from the default review mode to edit mode. You can return to review mode by clicking the switch again.

When in edit mode, clicking any fragment in the main section of the document makes the editing icons available in the middle of the document toolbar.

If you’ve enabled the Double-click to start edit mode option in your preferences, you can switch to edit mode by double-clicking in any fragment in a document.

Key differences from quick edit

Document edit mode differs from quick edit in several important ways:

  • A single editing toolbar appears in the document toolbar instead of separate toolbars for each editor.
  • You can navigate between documents while remaining in edit mode.
  • All fragments are editable simultaneously, allowing you to modify any part of the content without starting a new editor.
  • When you click the Save icon, your content is saved without closing the editor.
  • You can easily insert new fragments throughout the document.

Edit mode works best when making substantial changes to documents or creating new ones. Quick edit is more convenient when working with existing documents that require minimal changes.

Fragment edit options

Each fragment includes icons on the right side that provide additional functionality:

  • icon – open the fragment menu.
  • icon – save changes to the fragment (press Control+S to save all fragments).

Some documents or sections might have structure edit restrictions that prevent their content from being moved. In this case, the and icons are not available.
