Key point: Add a URL to PageSeeder.

Use this dialog to add a new URL to PageSeeder – UTM parameters are automatically removed.

Once a URL has been added by saving the URL dialog form, it can be found on the URLs page when Global search is selected. The URL is available for all groups to link to.

If Global search is NOT selected, the URLs page displays only the URLs that are “in use” in the current group. For a URL to be considered in use, and therefore listed on the URLs page for a group, it must be:

Used in a link in a document in that group.
OR, have a comment attached to it (Step 3).

You can open this dialog by clicking the “Plus” button, then click the Add URL option.

Using this option, once you have completed the following steps to add the URL to PageSeeder, at the top right beside the “Plus” button you see a temporary link to the newly created URL document. Once clicked, or you navigate away from the current page, this temporary link is no longer available.

URLs are automatically created when links are added to a document, but creating the URL beforehand in PageSeeder can be useful to let users select the URL from the drop-down menu when creating links. To create a link from a document to a URL, use the link dialog.

Filling out the URL dialog form

Changes to URLs are reflected globally and affect all groups.

The URL is registered only once in PageSeeder – the title, description, and labels are the same for each group.

Step 1 Select URL to add

URL

Enter the URL in the field. It must start with ‘http’ or ‘https’. This is the actual URL that is recorded in PageSeeder.

Only this first step is needed to create a URL. The following steps 2 and 3 are optional.

When you enter a valid URL, PageSeeder looks up and displays the details and metadata for this URL so that you can verify that it is correct.

Click the Save button, or click Next if you want to add or edit the URL details at Step 2.

URL dialog form – when using the URL bookmarklet

When you use the URL bookmarklet, PageSeeder prefills the field with the URL for the page you are currently viewing – UTM parameters are automatically removed.

You can click the Show more details option if you want to add more information to the URL, or click the Save button to save your URL. You see confirmation that the URL was created successfully. You can click the View URL on PageSeeder button to view the URL document.

URL already exists

If a URL already exists, you see a message confirming that the URL is already registered and when it was last updated. You can update the details of the URL, such as title, description or labels, and click Save. You see confirmation that the URL was updated successfully.

Where is the HTTP method?

PageSeeder doesn’t record any HTTP method (e.g. GET, POST) against the URL. If your URL is a result of a form submission or a service API, make sure that you can access it from the browser.

URL has been archived

Users see an Archived flag.

If the Allow contributors in this group to edit all URLs on the server option is enabled in the Advanced options (group). Only those users with permissions see an Unarchive url button. Click the button to add the URL, then click Save.

Step 2 Edit details

If you’re an administrator, the following options are available.

For managers: These options are also available to contributor or higher in a group that has the Allow contributors in this group to edit all URLs on the server option ticked, under the advanced options (group), available from the Group configuration page located at Administration menu > [Group] > Administration.

Title

The title that you want to use for the URL in PageSeeder. It is pre-filled with the title provided by the Website. If you don’t enter a title, the path is used instead. You generally don’t need to include the domain name because URLs are almost always displayed alongside their host name.

When you use the URL bookmarklet, PageSeeder prefills this field using the title of the page you’re viewing, but you’re free to use any other title.

Description

The description that you want to use for the URL in PageSeeder. It is pre-filled with the description provided by the Website.

Labels

You can add URL labels to categorize your URL. Labels are preceded by the icon. To add a label, click the icon. To remove a label, click the label itself.

Click the Save button to create the URL, or click Next to attach a comment to the URL at Step 3.

Step 3 Add a comment

You see a message in a yellow box stating that you can add a comment to the URL to let other group members know you have created it, and so that it can appear in search results and the URLs page for the group.

Click the Save button if you don’t want to add a comment.

The Add comment to this URL option is unchecked by default. Click the switch to enable adding a comment.

Enter a title and type a comment in the Your comment field. You can add labels to the comment. The current group is shown and the notification settings can be edited.

Click the Save and post comment button to save the URL.

Canonical and redirect messages

For both Canonical and Redirect messages, the information is supplied by the target Website.

Canonical URL

This is the actual URL to use in case several URLs point to the same page.

Websites sometimes use different URLs for the same page, so using the canonical URLs ensures that the same URL is used throughout. PageSeeder doesn’t care if multiple URLs point to the same page, but this makes reverse xrefs less useful.

If the Website suggests a canonical URL, PageSeeder prompts you to use the canonical URL instead. Click the button to use the canonical URL.

Use the canonical URL unless you have good reasons not to do it. It’s also possible to edit the URL after it has been created.

Redirect URL

This means the URL has moved and you should be using the specified location instead.

Redirects are really common with HTTP sites which have moved to HTTPS. The Website automatically redirects the user to the HTTPS URL.

If the Website redirects to a different URL, PageSeeder asks if you prefer using the redirect URL. Click the button if you want to use the specified location.

Use the redirect URL unless you have good reasons not to. You can also change the URL at another time, directly from the URL card or by editing the URL.
