When multiple URLs point to the same page or resource, websites usually indicate which one is the preferred URL. It is known as the canonical URL.
Search engines use the canonical URL to avoid duplicate results. PageSeeder also prefers the canonical URL to have a single reference to a page and to ensure that the same URL is used throughout.
PageSeeder doesn’t care if multiple URLs point to the same page, but then reverse xrefs are less useful – you cannot take advantage of automatically updating your links if they change.
When you add a new URL, PageSeeder prompts you to use the canonical URL if the URL you entered provides a canonical URL that is different to the URL.
If you copy and paste a link from a page or an email outside PageSeeder, it might include parameters that are used for tracking or marketing such as UTM parameters.
PageSeeder respects your privacy and automatically strips those parameters as they aren’t necessary to reach the page. But PageSeeder relies on the canonical URL to remove any other unnecessary parameters.
